Information for visitors

The Aragvi Protected Landscape  covers two geographical regions – southern part of Pshav-Khevsureti (approx. 78 % of the APL area) and Gudamakari (the rest of the APL at its western border). It lies on southern slopes of the Greater Caucasus, in the altitude 840–3842 m, it borders the Pshav-Khevsureti National Park in the north, and the whole Protected Landscape lies in the Aragvi River catchment basin.

Pshav-Khevsureti is located in north¬eastern Georgia along the northern and southern slopes of the Greater Caucasus Range. Its area totals 1600 km2, incl. Pshavi (560 km2) and Khevsureti (1040 km2). Piraketa/Inner Khevsureti (the Aragvi Valley of Khevsureti) is located along the southern slope of the Caucasus, and Pshavi in the Pshavi Aragvi Valley to the south of Piraketa Khevsureti.

Pshav-Khevsureti borders Tusheti to the east, Chechnya and Ingushetia (in the Russian Federation) to the north, Khevi and Mtiuleti-Gudamakari to the west, and Mtiuleti to the south.

Pshav-Khevsureti is surrounded by moun¬tain ranges to the east and the west. The Kidegani Range, Chaukhi massif, Gudamakari and Alevi Ranges lie to the west. Mutso, the Atsunta Range, Mount Borbalo and the Kakheti Range lie to the east. The region is characterized by a medium and high mountain landscape, and it encom¬passes mountain forest, subalpine, alpine, subnival and nival zones

The Gudamakari region is a narrow area squeezed between Pshav-Khevsureti from the east (divided by the Gudamakari Range), Mtiuleti from the southwest and Khevi from the northwest. Its landscape character is similar to the one described above.

According to the administrative-territo¬rial division, both southern part of Pshav-Khevsureti and Gudamakari are within the Dusheti Municipality in the Mtskheta-Mtianeti region, and include the Khevsureti, Magharoskari, Ukanapshavi and Gudamakari communities (temi).
